Weate here with friends last night. Swagat is a rather austere looking Indian restaurant on the Upper West Side in a city that now boasts dozens (hundreds?) of Indian eating places so competition is fierce. The food here is a mixed experience. The two chat dishes (Indian street snacks) were quite decent. The tandoori lamb chops were excellent - juicy, tender, beautifully spiced. If we had known this we would have ordered two plates of this delectable meat. The other main courses were acceptable but rather undistinguished. A shrimp/prawn dish (Malabar) had some tasty and not overcooked seafood but the sauce hadn\t done more than coat the shrimp. A chicken dish (Manglorean) with green chillies and ginger was deliciously hot but the sauce wasn\t complex enough for my taste. The Alooo Gobi vegetables (potato and cauliflower) , a favourite of ours, was the best of the remaining main dishes. Service was prompt and pleasant, and the prices were reasonable. I\d return quite happily and sample more dishes from the menu to see if our choices last night were an adequate representation of what Swagart has on offer.
