Our third visit was even more enjoyable than previous. The Derkum family provide comfortable, though not over large rooms. No problem for a two night stay, especially as we had the benefit of a shared balcony. Not a large menu choice in the MaternusKellerer, but very well cooked and presented, and very reasonably priced. And the Keller is just. A series of cellars, cool from the (hopeful) hot sun which generate a real local wine-land atmosphere

The Gästehaus Derkum is a small, family run establishment. They also run the restaurant in the same building and the winery of the same name. The building is old, but has been totally rebuilt so the rooms have all modern comforts. Our room was large and being in the corner of the building had a sort of oriel window, which created a sitting area full of light and with a view over the village. A comfortable bed and total peace and quiet made our stay relaxing and enjoyable. The bathroom was large and modern. This corner room is one of two, and definitely worth asking for when you book. You should not expect the service of a large luxury hotel, but the owners were friendly and helped us in with our luggage. On arrival, the street is quiet enough that you can stop to unload luggage. The ample free parking is located about 100 metres away. While some English is spoken, I was glad to be able to communicate with my very basic German. If, like us, you want to travel as a local would, you will find Gästehaus Derkum to be a real find. As a bonus, you will pay a lot less for the experience. We had a little difficulty making the booking on the internet and were not sure that we had the reservation. In the event, all went smoothly and we were glad that we had persevered. Highly recommended.
