We stayed at the Chequers for one night to tie into a visit to Chapel Down. The staff were warm and friendly and couldn't do enough for us we could not have been made to feel more welcome. Our room was in the oldest part of the building but everything was spot on - spotlessly clean and had all the facilities you would need to make you stay a comfortable one. We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday evening and the food was really good - the breakfast was really good too - the sausages at breakfast were probably the best i have ever had and came from the butchers in the village. A really lovely stay in a beautiful old building.

Went to the Chequers for a roast lunch on Easter Sunday. Ordered roast lamb. The meal arrived with the contents centered on a standard size dinner plate with a very big Yorkshire pudding on the side. Very disappointed with the minuscule portions of vegetables. They were hiding under two small slices of roast lamb and consisted of three chunks of roast potato, a sliver of parsnip, a sliver of carrot, a teaspoon of shredded cabbage and two tiny broccoli florets. What I had was well cooked and tasty but I finished the meal feeling peckish. So Chequers can you improve on your vegetable portion size that is served on the plate or serve the vegetables in separate vegetable dishes. Would be happy to pay more for a roast lunch if I was able to leave the table not feeling peckish. Staff were very friendly and attentive.

Lovely pub/b&b in the middle of a beautiful picturesque village. Food lovely, hospitality lovely room really nice nothing to fault. We stayed here for our 30th wedding anniversary and had a lovely time. The village itself is beautiful, the church is pretty much the only thing there but worth a look if you like history

Five friends and I spent three nights at Chequers Inn in early May. The Spaldings were wonderful to us. Melissa welcomed us on arrival, Scott pleasantly tended the bar, Glenn prepared delicious meals and Gwen was delightful serving breakfast each morning. it's unanimous, the hospitality of the Spaldings was above expectations. Booked a one night stay here, purely for the convenience of it being near the Big Cat Sanctuary, where I was visiting the next day. Had to double back when realised I'd missed the turning for the carpark, but apart from that minor issue our stay was great. King Arthur room has a medieval style and a huge four poster. Good thing I found the stepstool, as otherwise I would have had to jump to reach the mattress. Loved the copper basin in the bathroom too, although be warned it splashes like crazy. Slept well and breakfast (which you order night before) was exceptional. Really tasty with items presented beautifully and delivered courtesy of a lovely friendly lady.

I visited here with my wife after being recommended it by friends. Its a lovely traditional English pub which you used to be the village pub/inn for passing folk through the village of Smarden.its one of only two pubs in Smarden, situated on the main road through the village. Inside the pub,it's decorated with traditional English tapestry and is kept to a very nice standard throughout. The wine list is very extensive and well thought of, which perfectly compliments the great food they serve. The Sunday lunch was absolutely lovely, good size portions, nice selection of beef/pork or chicken with accompanying veg, cauliflower cheese and gravy. At the back of the pub there is a lovely beer garden. I would visit here again and recommend it to friends and family

I intended to write this on behalf of our friends who stayed there ages ago. We live in the village of Smarden and booked 2 nights in the Chequers Inn for our friends as a present. They were genuinely blown away by the room, the service and the food at the Chequers. The Room: We had booked the Guinevere room. The biggest and most luxurious of the rooms from what we had heard. The room was truly stunning with a gorgeous deep brass bath as a centre piece. The bed was comfy, the bathroom was beautiful and well stocked. The room had tea and fresh water ready and waiting. The water was in a reusable bottle, rather than plastic, which was a lovely eco-friendly touch. The Breakfast: Our friends still rave about this breakfast months after their visit. The presentation was beautiful and the food was brought warm, timely and especially delicious. The best breakfast they had ever had in their lives and that says something considering these are frequent travellers to exotic places all over the world. Dinner: The meals we had at the end of the day were equally delicious. Living in the village, we can honestly say we have yet to have a bad meal at The Chequers. It's always beautifully presented, tasty and there never is a long wait for it to be served. The staff: As always the staff at The Chequers are friendly and helpful. We always have a warm greeting and meals and drinks are served with a smile.
