Next stop on our journey was to pick up my cousin and his wife, who were joining us for a holiday to Belgium and Germany. So cross the Randers Fjord on the Orsted - Udby ferry, stop for a quick lunch at Faerge Hytten and then on to Rimso. The next morning, bright and early, we are off, the first night to be spent at the Hotel Groote Engel in Emlichheim. Thanks to our early start, we made it to our destination before supper, actually even managing a brief stop in nearby Emmen, which is in the Netherlands. This was a first time in the Netherlands for Verner and Brigitte. The Hotel Groote Engel is a very modern hotel, situated in a quiet industrial part of the town and only about a five minute drive to Emlichheim Center. There is free parking, free Wifi, modern, well equipped rooms. Outside, there is a nice garden terrace with a barbecue area. It has a welcoming appearance and of course, this was confirmed by the good service and welcome that we were given. We were shown the eating area, where we later on would eat our breakfast and were offered the hospitality of tea and/or coffee. The beds were comfortable as were the pillows, allowing us a good relaxing sleep, waking up refreshed the next morning. Our room rate included a breakfast, which was more than ample and delicious. As said, the location of the hotel was close to border with the Netherlands and motorway A37, as well as being close to the town centre. We had time before supper to get in a little sightseeing, (actually church seeing) the Reformed Church in Emlichheim dates from the 1100's. Emlichheim has existed at least since Charlemagne's time. It is mentioned in a document that dates back to 1312. We chose the Asia Bistro Golden Wok for a well prepared Chinese dinner, German style. The Emlichheim area warrants more than just a brief stay, so whether you are just passing through for one night or for a more protracted stay, the Hotel Groote Engel should more than 'do ya". P.S. The rooms each have a theme, ours had a western theme, I think, maybe, was the "Texas" room.
