We find that for new guests, finding us from the airport is tricky and so would recommend booking a transfer to avoid getting lost. We spent 5 days at Castara Retreats and really enjoyed our time there. Our villa was spacious, comfortable, and had absolutely stunning ocean views. The kitchen was well-equipped, which came in handy since the restaurant was closed our whole stay. One of the highlights for us was the wildlife: we came to Tobago hoping to see birds, and Castara delivered. The villas have bird feeders right outside (just bring or buy some seeds or fruit), and we saw a wide range of beautiful species every day. We were also adopted by a very sweet local cat who spent most afternoons lounging on our porch and curling up in our laps, which added so much charm to our stay. The walk down to town is short but quite steep; we didn’t mind it, but guests with knee issues or limited mobility should be aware. Once in town, there’s a small grocery store where we were able to pick up breakfast items and drinks, which was helpful since many places are cash-only and the local ATM has apparently been out of service for some time. There were a few areas where clearer communication would have improved the experience. The on-site restaurant ended up being closed for our entire stay, even though we had only been told about two planned closure days in advance. We would have appreciated updated communication on this, as we had been looking forward to enjoying the terrace restaurant so close to our villa. The in-room guidebook also contained outdated information—tour prices were 200–300TT higher than listed, and the yoga schedule wasn’t accurate (yoga is not offered daily, and requires advance coordination that isn’t guaranteed). Additionally, several of our text messages to the manager and reception went unanswered. Overall, though, we found Castara Retreats to be a beautiful and relaxing place to stay, with so much natural beauty and a truly peaceful atmosphere. With more consistent communication and updated information for guests, it could be even better. We would still recommend staying here—possibly paired with time elsewhere on the island for the best balance—but the setting, wildlife, and warmth of the place make it a lovely experience.

Without doubt an amazing experience at a beautiful location. Situated close to the town which felt very safe and friendly. Castara retreats staff went out of their way to make my 60th birthday celebration special. Tobagan people were all lovely & such a fabulous and safe country.

Spending my birthday at Castara we were absolute spoiled :-) . We had the smallest room I guess, the Firefly, and I loved it! It feels like a treehouse but with stairs instead of ladders. The most delicious Rhum cake (complimentary) and a bottle of bubbly waited in the room as we arrived. The staff are helpful, proffessional, lovely people that really wants you to have a memorable stay. Do not miss the restaurant. We spent hours there, looking at animals and birds in the trees. The beach is clean and there are lots of space! We also walked to the waterfall, took about 20 minutes. Went for snorkelling with lovely Williams to many spots and loved the clean, healthy waters with lots of fish. For breakfast try the salty fish. For drinks their Rhum Punch. For lunch and dinner we tried everything and all was superb.

A truly exceptional visit to a magical place. It is authentic, charming and yes, not perfect and the rooster will wake you up at 5am and the towels aren't changed every day (let's be kind to the planet) and the service in the restaurant needs improvement on speed though the food is wonderful BUT these just don't matter and simply add to the charm of the place and overall it is the most wonderful hotel and retreat. Castara is full of charm, run by truly lovely staff and spending a holiday there was a tonic. This is a place for those who want to enjoy a true Caribbean escape to a place that feels like home. If you want 5* clinical then this is not for you but if you want to feel like you belong and you value a genuine relaxed Caribbean escape then Castara is the place. I cannot wait to return.

Great place with open plan rooms giving a fantastic view of the bay. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, they let us stay in the room on the last day because we had an evening flight. The food at the restaurant was top class.

This was our second trip to Castara retreats and we loved it just as much. Tobago is a safe laid-back holiday experience amongst welcoming and helpful locals.. We loved the simplicity of Castara retreats, their beautiful eco cabins, ethical position on the environment and investing in their community and the fantastic food. The cooking is really exceptional and absolutely perfect for pescatarians (although there is always some meet on the menu) with fish straight out of the bay. The menus are imaginatively designed making the very best of local, creatively combined ingredients. Cocktails are tip top. All the staff are delightful.

Castara Retreats didn't disappoint on our second visit. Our lodge looked out over the bay at the front and on the rear patio we were practically in the rain forest. Lovely helpful and friendly staff who want you to enjoy yourself. The lodges are well equipped for self-catering if you want, however being on holiday we only prepared snacks. It's only a 5 minute walk to the beach which was never crowded. A short walk over the headland takes you to Little Castara which was even quieter. A hire car is a must to see more of the island. Beware the roads are horrendous, and definitely don't drive out at night. Get your car hire delivered to the Retreat. We recommend Taylors who were very obliging. Be warned also that there are lots of steps up from sea level. Caribbean Kitchen is one of the best restaurants on the island, everything was delicious. Recommend the coconut ice cream! It was lovely eating in the open air enjoying the sound of the waves and seeing lights twinkling in the village below. A relaxing 10 days in a beautiful and special place. November is nearly the end of the rainy season and we did experience some tropical rainstorms so travel later if you want guaranteed sunshine as we had on our first visit in March.

We had a wonderful time at Castara Retreats. The accomodation was amazing, clean and had a large balcony with comfortable seats. The bed and shower were great and also the kitchen had many appliences, so you could cook if you'd like to. The views of the ocean are spectacular! Thanks for the great surprise and delight upgrade, we enjoyed our time at CR.
