We stayed during August for 5 nights. When we arrived on a Monday it was quiet and we explored the youth hostel after a long drive. The next day we discovered that a group from NCS were booked in and all communal rooms were reserved. On top of this the dining room was reserved between peak times of 5.30-6.30 each evening and from 8.30am in the morning. This forced us to be up early each morning and effectively we could only use the hostel as a bed. Had we been made aware before our arrival we would have chosen another hostel. The noise from the group was ridiculous with the group racing up and down the corridor for most of the night every evening and when challenged they were rude and abrupt 'what do you expect from a group of teenagers'. Having spoken to another traveller, it was apparent that the NCS had booked it as a base for the whole of August so the YHA would have been fully aware of this prior to our arrival. On top of this the oven in the communal kitchen broke on Monday and it wasn't back working until Thursday which rendered the kitchen useless - when we could actually gain access

Great location for nearby walks - High Willhays, Belstone Tor, and more. Okehampton town on its own has plenty to entertain for a weekend. Hostel building is good with an upstairs lounge and games room. Plus is right next to the heritage railway station! My only gripe is the hostel seems more keyed up for the adventure business that runs alongside, which is fine except there is no dedicated warden (it seems) so lacks in the personal friendly side this brings.

I’ve not visited a youth hostel since school so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The location is right on Dartmoor so ideal for backpackers. It is also next to a train station so can be quite noisy. The last train was around midnight so it was quiet after that. The reception were friendly and there was a nice atmosphere with all the different travellers. I had a private en suite room. It was basic but looked clean. The bathroom was quite mouldy though. I wasn’t expecting a lot for the price but I don’t think there should be mould in any room. It was on the ceiling, walls, bath mat etc and the toilet randomly poured water into the bowl which wasn’t nice if you were sitting down. The communal toilets were very clean, although a bit mouldy in places too depending on which ones you used.

Came here with my local walking group over the Easter weekend. A lovely hostel, great customer service and a very comfortable stay. The only gripes are the over hot self catering kitchen and too few power sockets in our room, only two sockets for four people.

A one night stop off at the beginning of our short father and son break at the end of the Summer holidays, and this was a great place to start. Welcoming staff, excellent ‘all you can eat’ breakfast and very reasonably priced bicycle hire set us on our way. I like the fact that this hostel is located next to both the railway station, and the start of the excellent ‘Granite Way’ cycle path 27. Excellent.

The reception staff was very welcoming! I found that the selfcatering kitchen was way to small when the hostel is full and when guests are asked to wash up and dry the kichen equipment straight away there has to be plenty of clean tea towels! On the first night there were 4 and they were wet and dirty, maybe because people were also using them to dry their hands? There wasn't any sink for washing hands and no paper to dry hands or to pick up spilled food etc.If one went to the toilet to wash hands before cooking food the hands would be dirty before getting through all the doors on the way back to the kitchen! There was an old armchair in my room which ought to be thrown away, the seat was broken! And it took up floor space needed for luggage when the room is full! I really needed somewhere in either the room or preferably the ladies toilet area where I could use my hair dryer in front of a mirror! But there were no electrical sockets in the ladies toilet and in the room there were only 2 behind a bed far from the mirror!

Excellent location, friendly staff. Only one complaint and that was the room was far too hot. I couldn't sleep and my children were sweating. TBF, I did not report this to staff due to the short length of our stay.

Not having used a YHA in about 30 years, I had forgotten that many of them offer spaces to camp plus you get to use their showers, kitchen etc.. Great facilities. The staff at Okehampton were so friendly and welcoming - nothing was too much hassle. I have already started planning the next trip back to the YHA with the family this time. Thank you Okehampton YHA team.

Just a word of warning to those arriving by train (the station is right next to the hostel so this ought to be an environmentally responsible option). There will be nowhere to leave your bags until reception opens at 5pm. The website suggests that the hostel is staffed all day long. That is not true.
