We stayed two nights at L’Etape de Santenay Hotel while cycling in Burgundy. Good decision. The two high points were the exceptional host(ess) and the location. Katie was really great - friendly, professional, informative, attentive, and accommodating. She got up early to make sure we got coffee and a Brie-filled baguette before our early departure on the last day. She shared her thoughts on wine tasting spots and dining options, and she knew what she was talking about. She was always busy and yet always had the time to pause and chat. The hotel is right on the main square in Santenay and it has a huge umbrella-covered terrace next to the fountain out in the square. We enjoyed lunch there one day and drinks on another. Wonderful! Continental breakfast in the hotel dining room - warm croissants and other baked goods, juice, coffee. Dinner one night there - was simple but good, desserts were excellent, 10/10! The hotel is not lavish, or traditional, or quaint. And yet it is a good place to stay. Our first floor room was basic but fine. Clean, good bed, window opening out to the square, quiet, enough storage, good bathroom, plenty of hot water. No elevator but that didn’t matter to us. Great location! Secure inside bike storage was provided for our bikes. Fluent English and French spoken. Excellent restaurants adjacent, wine tours and tastings easily accessible, vineyard bike rides at your doorstep.
