We paired our stays at The Last Word Long Beach and Kitara, and could not have been happier with the decision. We’ve stayed at lodges priced three times higher, and we can confidently say that Last Word Kitara delivers a safari experience every bit as memorable, with impeccable service to match — all at a third of the price. Amazing value for money for the quality of game driver and overall lodge experience! It is worth highlighting that Kitara sits within a private nature reserve, which made the game drives exceptionally exclusive — more often than not, it was just our vehicle and the wildlife. Over our 4D3N stay, we were fortunate enough to spot all of the Big Five, a truly unforgettable achievement. Adding to the magic was the breathtaking helicopter flight over Blyde Canyon, thoughtfully arranged by Kitara. In a moment that felt almost cinematic, we spotted the final member of the Big Five — the rhino — from the air. An extraordinary experience, executed flawlessly from start to finish. With only six suites, the atmosphere is wonderfully quiet, intimate, and attentive. The food is generous and beautifully prepared, adding to the sense of comfort and care. Overall, we feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered this gem. A remarkable stay in every way.

This was an amazing place. The raw experience of seeing the animals in the wild with great guide/tracker. We hugely recommend this as a top place to go. Touches the heart to see the care of the wild and conservation. On top of it being 5 star all the way 😀

We have just returned from the most wonderful vacation spent at Last Word Kitara. Managers Susan & Pierre were the perfect hosts, although every single staff member was pleasant, courteous and extremely helpful in every way. Everyone went out of their way to ensure we had the most memorable stay. This game lodge felt very homely, spotlessly clean and on a stunning location. The food served was of the highest quality and the chefs have to be complimented on the variety of options available every day. The game drives with our guide Pierre and tracker Vusi were absolutely fantastic. Pierre’s knowledge of all the animals was very impressive and we managed not only to see the big 5 but I think virtually all animals on the reserve. Our highlights would have to be seeing a Leopard with a kill and a pride of ten Lions calmly stroll past our vehicle, absolutely unforgettable experience. The only downside was that we had to leave.

**The Last Word Kitara: Where the Wild Things Are (and So Is the Crème Brûlée)** I’ve done a few safaris now. Enough to know the difference between a good camp and a great one. Enough to have opinions about sundowners and game drives and what actually matters when you’re out in the bush. But this trip was different. My wife and I were bringing our seven and nine year old boys—their first safari. We still wanted that boutique, intimate experience we love, but we also needed the practical stuff: air conditioning, a pool, and meals for picky eaters. The Last Word Kitara, about 90 minutes from HDS, turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. Six rooms total. We booked two of them. By sheer luck, we had the entire lodge to ourselves for our stay. There’s something about chilling in the pool with a cold drink while elephants and cape buffalo wander past. It’s the kind of moment you don’t forget. The kind that makes all the logistics of traveling with kids worth it. Our tracker and guides—Patric, Nathan, and Matthew—have been phenomenal. Patient with the boys, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about what they do. If you’re planning a trip here, give yourself three to six days minimum. 4-5 would allow time for a walking safari and the K9 experience. Both are well worth doing! Then there’s Chef Sibu. The wildlife is why you come to Africa but Sibu’s cooking is why you’ll remember Kitara specifically. Every single meal has been exceptional. And his desserts? I’d come back just for those. The food and drink alone are worth the journey. It’s been the boys’ birthdays during our stay, and the staff made cakes from scratch, sang happy birthday, and made them feel special in a way that felt genuine. That kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail runs through everything here. Marlo and Rajane have been hosting us beautifully—gracious, accommodating with the kids, making sure every detail is handled without you feeling fussed over. The housekeeping is meticulous. Rooms were restored to perfection after we returned from each game drive. This is a perfect safari: wild and comfortable in equal measure. Intimate enough to feel personal. I already know this is the kind of place we’ll be talking about for years.

From the moment we arrived and saw the elephant and buffalo grazing below the property we knew this would be excellent. All staff were excellent, particular mention to the two ladies serving the food and to Matt and vuse in our safari jeep. There is nothing Matt does not know about the bush this was more than seeing the big five which we did with ease although the 2 leopards proved elusive, we talked about the little 5 the ugly 5 and so much more saw 2 packs of wild dogs plenty of rhino and hyena and on the last day a pride of 10 lions would highly recommend to all ,food was exceptional for being so deep in the bush, transfer journey a little long but well worth it would return if we had the chance

From the moment we arrived, we knew Kitara was something special. Every single person on the team pours their heart and soul into every detail — you can feel it everywhere, from the warm welcome to the smallest touches throughout your stay. The food was absolutely fantastic — the kitchen team constantly surprised us with delicious dishes and thoughtful treats. We were spoiled every single minute! The safaris were beyond amazing, with breathtaking animal encounters that we will never forget. Jomo is a fantastic tracker with incredible skills and an impressive intuition for reading the bush. Connor, our guide, is a gifted storyteller with immense knowledge — whether it’s about animals, plants, the ecosystem, or history. He made us feel as though a friend was guiding us, not someone we had just met. There were so many laughs and wonderful moments together. The way Jomo and Connor can read and respect the animals’ moods is simply remarkable. It’s clear that they truly care for the wildlife and the ecosystem with all their hearts. The entire team at Kitara is always there for you, 24/7, ready to answer questions, share more stories, or simply make your stay as perfect as possible. And they really did — right up until the very end. It has been a perfect experience in every way. We already miss it and can’t wait to come back!
