First time here and really impressed. Our dog friendly suite (room1) with a terrace was perfect. We enjoyed great food and cocktails/wine. The breakfast was perfect with some of the best eggs ever. Above all the staff are so friendly and efficient. Lots of walks around so easy for dog visitors!

Ordered pint of Guinness and a ploughman’s. Didn’t have any Guinness. Ploughman’s was very mean. Two very small slices of bread. The egg that was in the ploughman’s arrived after I’d finished eating. Very bizarre. Not quite what you expect from a top price pub lunch.

Classy ! We expected the room to be spotless, elegant, welcoming and comfortable, appointed with quality fabrics, soft towels and expensive toiletries. We were impressed with the replenishment of water, tea bags and biscuits etc during the daily service and turn down activities. Extra kudos for the number of USB charging points, and well located sockets! Two things delighted us. 1. The little inroom extra’s, informing about the local businesses and attractions in the village, helping to build a destination and thriving local community. I should also mention the very well produced walking guides in their waterproof cover and the borrowable wet weather gear (very welcome in February!). 2. The staff. Everyone (including the handyman in the car park assisting with the EV charger) was friendly, well trained and helpful. Genuine smiles, confidently going about their tasks, making sure you had the best experience possible. The South Downs is a lovely location for a short break, the Star is the perfect place to base yourself for an exceptional stay. Bravo !

Stayed in a local hotel that unfortunately was not serving food in the evening due to it being out of season. Walked into the high street looking for dinner and the star was open. Great first impression. It was a week night so very quiet. Had a table in the restaurant. We had no expectations about the food as it just looked like a pub to us. Upon checking the menu it was clear that this was more exclusive, which was a nice surprise as just passing through and always nice to eat well. Service was very good. Attentive .Menu had a good choice. The food in my humble opinion was very disappointing considering the price. The food was good but nothing special, no wow factor. Had it been 30% cheaper we would have felt that it was good value, however it was a very expensive meal . Would I come back? ... No , not unless they had an offer on. There are many restaurants out there that are considerably cheaper serving better food. Had the meal blown us away then it would have been a nice treat but ultimately we felt that the price didn't reflect the quality.

We had two nights here, on a dinner bed & breakfast package & we thought it was excellent. Congrats to the hotel for creating such a lovely place & providing a top quality experience. We loved the ‘proper’ bar, which was popular with locals, a good sign. Food was great & we had a very comfortable bedroom. Parking on site, so all good. Recommended!

We visited for a few days. Our room (a junior suite) was spacious and comfortable. The hotel having been entirely refurbished only a couple of years ago, the fittings and decoration are new and smart. It is also nice to have both a bath and a spacious separate shower. Breakfast, although with fewer choices than you sometimes see, was very good. Black pudding was especially good - as was the home-made marmalade (although not together!). It was nice that staff were young and local while also very competent and friendly. Recommended.
