I really enjoyed my first time staying here. Plenty of parking, easy to find. It was busy with families and groups as expected during the school holidays but there was plenty of space inside and outside, so this wasn't a problem at all. Lots of benches outside. The grounds are amazing! Lovely to explore in the evenings and morning before open to the public. I really loved staying here. I was in an 8 bed female dorm, clean, solid beds, no creaking when going up the ladders! BUT it was hot. I wouldn't want to stay here during a heatwave Not many windows to open. It was just about bearable when it was about 23 degrees outside. That's the only downside. Staff were lovely. Breakfast standard YHA fare ❤️ bloody love the YHA and I'm always astounded I can stay in something that looks like a castle very cheaply! Amazing. Thank you. Highly recommend, will come again

I haven’t been to a youth hostel in many years. I went to Ilam Hall because I wanted to have a little adventure on my own. I never expected to find such a wonderful place. Ilam Hall is a beautiful building set and stunning countryside. All the staff I met during my stay were extremely friendly and welcoming. All the facilities were clean and of a very nice quality. I had a lovely dinner which I was able to eat outside in the sunshine and a nice breakfast the next day. The whole experience was also incredibly good value for money. I love the ethos of the YHA too. I would definitely go again.

Came here and stayed there for 2 nights because we attended Alton towers. We had a good stay, the breakfast was nice and the surrounding areas were lovely. Some cons are the WiFi does not work in the rooms at all, you have to either go in the corridor and get 1 bar or go in the communal space. And there’s no phone service with any phone provider, so using WiFi call, how can I make private phone calls in communal areas? We had a dirty bedsheet too that we had to get replaced by the staff, which they were quick and easy to do. The window didn’t open all the way and in a summer month, it got hot inside the room. Would stay here again but no longer then 2 nights.

Great experience for our bike packing trip. Arrived cold, wet and muddy, but the warm welcome and hot shower were fabulous. Enjoyed a good meal, nice drinks, relaxing in the cosy lounge and cooked breakfast. Fantastic friendly staff too. Amazing value for money.

Ilam Hall is a beautiful place,it is a youth hostel that caters really well for all ages, rooms are clean, some have en suite, pay extra for, totally good value, food is good, two café on site and a second hand book shop. Large national trust car park. The hostel has a bar licence too. The location is stunning. If you are wanting to walk and explore our wonderful country side and heritage I can't think of a better place to stay,I would encourage younger people to try it out. Staff are brilliant and me and my 3 friends felt total safe.

We stayed here as a group of women looking for somewhere to rest our head after a walk. We stayed in a 6-bed private en-suite room. We paid about £30 each including our breakfast. When we first walked up to the hall I got “Traitors Castle” vibes. I could not believe that this place was a youth hostel! The hostel is situated in Ilam Park, which is a National Trust park. There is a car park charge but this is at a reduced rate for staying guests. We paid £2 at the youth hostel when we checked in. This gave us until 1pm the following day. The hostel was very clean. We had en-suite but there were 6 of us so we did used the communal facilities too, which were also very clean. There were no noise issues at night. There’s 1 pillow per bed so, if you like a fluffy pillow, take one from home if possible. The breakfast was surprisingly very good. The cooked breakfast was of a good quality for the price and was unlimited. The small pastries were warm. There was a good choice of food and drink for breakfast. There isn’t a local pub or shop in the village and the YHA didn’t have a huge choice of drinks (no plastic bottled drinks) or snacks if you are going out the next day but there is a catering kitchen so you can make food to take with you and there is a water filling station. The Manifold Tea Room (National Trust in the grounds) has a better choice of takeaway drinks in plastic bottles or cans but can be quite pricey. There is a small evening menu, however if you are looking to eat out then I highly recommend the Okeover Arms about 2 or 3 miles drive away. If you are going walking then there are lots of routes that start at ilam hall, including to the dovedale stepping stones and a circular through Wetton Village. Overall, i can’t fault this place. This was my first time at a youth hostel since I was at school and I was so impressed that I’m planning to visit more on a regular basis.
