This is less a hotel and more a long-form lesson in managing expectations. We arrived optimistic. That was our first mistake. Breakfast does not exist here — not in practice, not in theory, not even as a concept. Morning arrived, and so did the realisation that survival was now a self-guided activity. Coffee? Hope? Both absent. The building carries a permanent sense of neglect, as though everyone involved quietly agreed to stop trying years ago. The silence is oppressive, punctuated only by suspicious scuttling that adds an unexpected interactive element to the stay. Nature, it seems, has checked in permanently. Staff were memorable mainly for their absence, and any sense of hospitality felt purely accidental. By checkout, we were less guests and more escapees. If you’re looking for an immersive experience in disappointment, mild dread, and architectural despair, congratulations — you’ve found it. For everyone else, this review is your warning. Also believe it's now went into liquidation, all staff unpaid paymen group are a disgrace

Stayed here for 2 nights with work. Clean, spacious and very picturesque surroundings. The main building has nice grounds for a wander sitting right next to the river. Lots of storage room for clothes, bags and whatever else you decide to bring. Pitch black at night though so it would be a good idea to bring a torch or something if you need to nip to the car.

酒店回复: Dear Phil, Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We’re delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay and that the cottage, surroundings, and grounds made for a comfortable and relaxing visit during your work trip. It’s great to know the storage space and cleanliness met your expectations too. We appreciate your helpful note about it being very dark at night .Bringing a torch is a great tip for future guests. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Best regards, Aria

Recently returned from The love lady shield hotel. What a little gem. In the heart of the country side. Stunning views a babbling brook runs along side of it green valleys hills. Plenty of routes to take for hikers. The place is just beautiful. The management staff and the chef give you a 100% attention. The bed room was clean and cosy with plenty of rooms to sit and relax. The food was exquisite from the evening meal an afternoon tea and breakfast. If it's peace and quite your after a relaxing break highly recommend it

We love the north east so I chose this hotel outside Alston for a couple of nights to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The run up to our visit made me nervous. Firstly there are the awful reviews. Then the hotel contacted me to tell me they no longer did breakfasts . They would not allow me to cancel on the grounds that they had broken the contract. They did refund a portion of the money I believe- I haven't checked yet. Finally shortly before our stay they sent a message with a link. They said if I did not complete the link my booking would be cancelled. The link did not work so I sent a message to be told it did not matter. So I was prepared to turn round and go elsewhere. The approach is along a potholed drive. Very potholed. When we left the drive had become a stream and so the potholes will get worse. It's single track so when you meet a car travelling in the opposite direction you have a problem as there are no passing places. The drive needs addressing as a priority. We arrived at the hotel (which also has cottage accommodation) parked up and went to Reception. The lady there explained the front door key code and took us to our room on the second floor. The public areas of the hotel seemed gloomy and somewhat off putting so we didn't explore them. Again this needs addressing with investment needed to transform the areas. Thankfully our room was lovely. Large and bright , overlooking the lawns. There was a large comfy bed with a couple of small bedside tables and lights plus sockets to charge your phone. There was plenty of storage space, 2 chairs , TV, tea and coffee. The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate. Small issues: one of the bedside lights did not work. There was insufficient milk. There was no housekeeping after day 1. We couldn't figure out how to get live TV easily. I am unsure if this hotel is a work in progress. With a bit of money invested it could be potentially outstanding.

A Country House Hotel that does not serve breakfast is not acceptable. They charged for breakfast and a few days before stay, refunded breakfast with bald statement that they did not do breakfast. This was in depths of Pennines where you would be hard pushed to find breakfast elsewhere.

We booked a room at this so-called hotel, for bed and breakfast. Paid up front when we booked and received on-line confirmation of our b&b stay. A few days before our stay, we were curtly informed that no breakfast would be provided and they refunded the cost of the breakfast element. No explanation or apology. No offer of continental breakfast. This was not suitable for us, and as they are in breach of contract, we cancelled booking and requested full refund. This has been refused and this evening, they have twice phoned to ask why we had not arrived. We cancelled booking because this hotel could not provide the basic service that they both offered and charged for. I have no intention of letting them get away with this fraud, and if needed, will be seeking legal advice.

Lovely hotel, great clean room with all facilities. Staff very friendly. Lovely quiet location with beautiful grounds.
Only negatives would be that the drive is full of large pot holes that need filling, and a week before our stay they told us they were not doing food so had to drive into the local town which was difficult to park.

somewhere else that kept its promise. They offered a refund of the VERY potholed. Inside the hotel is a very gloomy vibe - it's clearly in need of a major refurb. We didn't look at any of the public rooms as they didn't invite inspection.
Our room was nice.
When I got home I found no refund. I contacted them and was told they had made a mistake: instead of the £47.80 originally promised they refunded £40.63. That figure does not divide by 4 (2 people staying 2 nights)
Alston is lovely: but stay somewhere else as this hotel cannot be relied on.
