We pulled up outside and took our cases in we were early and our room wasn’t ready it was only 12 so we went to use the spa which was spot on it is getting a totally new spa next year, and if you look closer you can see it’s needed but it’s so chilled a lovely place to relax. We had Sunday lunch at 2 we were both really hungry and told the young lady so she said it’s fine you’ll be getting some nice bread soon. I asked if we could have a table in the window and was told unfortunately not it’s for 4, then after we had been seated a couple were sat down by another member of staff in the window seat and the extra plates were taken away. I asked about the bread twice and when she said I’ll follow it up again it was too late we had already had starters and the main was due. I then asked about our lunch as other people were being served theirs and they had sat down after us, it did turn up then the food was all beautiful I have to say we just felt a bit like the poor relations a bit forgotten about. Our room was lovely with an amazing comfortable bed, and little bottles of milk in the fridge brilliant idea. Breakfast the next morning was again lovely but it again took a long time to get to us once again we got toast no butter and the hot breakfast was just warm, but nice ingredients. The staff we came into contact with were lovely I just wish there was one person in charge at the restaurant seating people down to make sure every guest gets everything they need it just lets it down a bit.

Matfen Hall is an excellent country hotel, great location. The staff are enthusiastic, friendly, helpful and not at all pretentious. I found the check in process a little odd, the receptionists dont have a desk to work from, so you are led into the incredible main hall, given a welcome drink then the paperwork is sorted. They have an App which should serve as your room key, this would not work for us dont think wifi is great. They do have plastic key cards to use. We did have a couple of small issues, which were dealt with by the staff which included giving us an upgrade. Alan the porter was a great help. They have 2 restaurants plus the Keepers, different menus. The Food is first class, thought not inexpensive. In the process of building a new Spa facility, the on going work did not affect our stay. We did not play golf but the course provides a lovely outlook from the restaurant. This is a beautiful hotel.

Matfen Hall provides a breathtaking experience from the quality of the room and bathroom to the awe inspiring Great Hall featuring an open fire place, and authentic detail which encourages you to explore deeper into the building where the restoration does not fail to impress. The staff are helpful, cheerful and very friendly. Definitely worth a return visit.

We had the most lovely time, staying one night. We choose the taster menu with wine tasting in the Emerald Restaurant and had such a great evening. Jon served us and made the evening for us. His knowledge regarding the food, the wine he had paired for us and is general lovely manner made for a very enjoyable evening. Our room was excellent too with a complimentary bottle of Champagne, which was greatly appreciated. We will be back in the future
