Recently visited with friends for drinks . Nice pleasant barmaid served us after waiting very patiently to get a drink . The landlord did appear eventually as I was being served, I made a comment to the landlord that the bar was busy as after we arrived the bar did increase in customers. The Landlords response was “ well they are going to have to wait “ In my opinion, this was not the right way to respond and his customers should come first! Extremely disappointed and will not be returning due to a rude landlord.

I was greeted very politely by a very busy member of staff. Service was a little slow but only because it is clearer a popular venue for locals as well as travellers. My room 14 was very comfortable and clean. There is a damp patch on the ceiling outside the ensuite door.
Unfortunately i did not see any staff to show them as i left.
A very convenient place to stay right in the centre of the lovely market town.

Went for a breakfast at the Wellington. Easy to get parked. Nice warm and friendly welcome from the landlord and the staff. Ordered the full English breakfast. Really good quality. Came quick and everything was fresh and hot. Great value for money in a casual setting. Was busy but still felt well looked after. Would highly recommend if you are looking for a bite to eat with family and friends. We are booking again to try the Sunday lunch.

Had a lovely over night stay at the wellington in beautiful Howden . The landlord Craig was very friendly, and also the young lady behind the bar. We checked in after having a steak and onion baguette to share outside and couple of drinks . The room was clean and tidy bit quirky 😉 with its sloping floor (yes we had only had 2 beers 🍺) But the building is over 250yr old so its expected . No complaints for the price we paid for bed and breakfast for one night it did the job fine . Nice big car park and a outside seating area The bar area is furnished contemporary . Breakfast was fine cooked weĺl although no fruit juice was offered but not a issue. . We will stay again if in howden as its near to everything and not expensive.

09/08/2025 We were visiting friends in Howden, and needed town centre accommodation It was a toss up between the Wellington and Bowmans. Not much to choose between them, so went for the Wellington as it appeared to be part of a more local hotel group The cost for two nights was £158, payable on arrival We were asked to give an arrival time. I entered 16.00. We arrived at 16.30 to find the hotel all locked up with nobody to be seen A typed note attached to the front door with a drawing pin asked hotel guests to phone the mobile number shown. I did….. no answer… I left a message on voicemail. A few minutes later, my phone rang, and a voice muttered something about a missed call. I explained again. A good 5 or 6 minutes later our host appeared, looking as if he’d just got out of bed I can’t recall ever having had a welcome to a hotel quite like this before. It had a Faulty Towers feel to it. When we got to “reception”, he announced that his wife had been taken into hospital with an undiagnosed issue, and consequently they wouldn’t be able to provide breakfast, but would be giving a discount of £5 per person per day (total, £20). Breakfast, he said could be obtained at the Badger and Bean café a short walk away I put it to him that £5 would hardly buy a breakfast, and that our booking was made on the understanding that breakfast was included in the price. We had chosen to book at the Wellington in preference to other establishments, and that the provision of inclusive breakfast formed part of that decision. He argued that the cost of the room was £79 anyway and that the breakfast was “just thrown in “ Considering his personal circumstances, I felt disinclined to pursue the argument further. We obtained breakfast at the Badger and Bean on the first morning at £28.45, and at Atkinsons bakery on the second morning for £20.85, meaning we were out of pocket by £29.30 due to our host being unwilling to honour the conditions under which the booking was made. Needless to say, we did not spend another penny in the Wellington, taking out business elsewhere Would I use the Wellington again? Never Would I recommend the Wellington? No My advice: Book in at the Bowmans

The Sunday lunch was terrible. The Yorkshire puddings were an embarrassment to a Yorkshire lass. The bar service was like something out of faulty towers. Needless to say won’t be back

We went for Sunday lunch which was served in a large Yorkshire pudding. It was the worst Sunday lunch we had ever tasted. The presentation was terrible. Everything was piled up on the plate. I have never seen Yorkshire puddings like these before. They were completely flat like an omelette. I struggled to cut it. I think the chef used the wrong flour or ran out of eggs. I was very suprised a chef in Yorkshire cannot produce edible Yorkshire puddings. Top tip to the chef: Buy Aunt Bessies puds from the Co op across the road.

Craig and his team made us feel very welcome. Everything was clean and fresh, the food and drink were delicious. Great value and Howden is lovely too. For anyone looking for an excellent hotel, in a good location and great value, you must come here!

We decided to pop for a late lunch today after hearing great things. The food and service was excellent. The salt & pepper “real chips” were to die for! Finally Howden has a pub serving tasty, affordable “pub grub”! We will definitely be back!

Good value accomodation
On a Monday, Howden is closed so any accom is struggling. On a Tue it’s a lovely market town and this offers good value basic accomodation - with a good local pint
