**A Major Disappointment** A long-anticipated girls’ weekend at a spa turned out to be anything but what we had hoped for. The spa facilities are worn, and there was a smell of mold in the steam room, which was tired and clearly past its prime. The showers in any gym locker room have better water pressure—and there are more of them—than in the women’s spa changing area. Both the indoor and outdoor pools were far too cold given the sub-zero temperatures and snow outside. The saunas were not warm enough either. The wood-fired sauna has to be lit by the guests themselves, but it is not set up to make this easy. After first asking at the bar, then being sent up to the spa reception in swimwear, and finally being handed a lighter as “assistance,” the sauna was never lit. As a former scout, I tried diligently. But in a cold swimsuit, a thin robe, and slippers, firewood plus a lighter was not a success. At the very least, there should have been a candle and some paper or fire starters available. There were also no hooks anywhere, which resulted in total chaos in a pile of bathrobes, and the room key that was in a pocket was lost when someone took the robe. I can add that another group of friends sat in the same sauna as us and talked about exactly the same issues pointed out in this review. The food was just acceptable. Breakfast was the best meal. The tomato soup at dinner tasted more like instant soup than restaurant food and felt completely out of place on the menu. We had to go to the bar to get service after waiting 20 minutes at our table before dinner, as no one seemed to notice us—even though the head waiter had seated us. Unfortunately, this was a recurring theme throughout the weekend. Every time we asked for something, we were made to feel like a real nuisance and extremely demanding, as if the staff would rather we just went home. The experience culminated in a terribly loud after-party with raucous music starting around midnight and continuing for several hours. It was impossible to sleep. At a place that markets itself as a spa resort, I believe a good night’s sleep should be taken more seriously by the staff. I should also mention that there were white stains on the edge of the mattress in our room. Rømskog Spa has a beautiful location, and with some upgrades to the spa and slightly more attentive staff, it could also become a pleasant place to visit.
