This is a cracking little pub, let down entirely by customers being given the distinct impression that they are considered an inconvenience. I don't think it acceptable to be told when you arrive that the kitchen will be closing in a hour (this is 7pm on a Saturday), encouraging us not to order starters, asking if we could order deserts whilst we're mid-way through our mains, and then being asked to pay when we'd not finished the desserts we did order. All of this delivered via unsmiling and sultry staff. I hope they improve on this because it could be one of Essex's finest pubs.

Group of 6 friends table booked for 7pm on a Saturday night. Given menses found the specials ourselves. The unfriendly waitress who couldn’t smile informed us we needed to order quickly as the kitchen was closing at 8pm! Really on a Saturday night,they could have told us when booking so we had the option to go elsewhere. While waiting for the main meal she asked if we could order desserts to help the kitchen get them ready. We said no because until we had eaten we wouldn’t know what we would want. Food was fine once served asked if we wanted anything with it so asked for cutlery and napkins twice and sauces. We did order desserts again they were fine but the unfriendly service was just such a put off. In the next bar area group of people were drinking all very clicky including the waitress who had perked up by then as no longer serving us. 9.30 told closing soon could we pay. I doubt they were judging the bar area and drinks being served. We all felt like we were an inconvenience. So disappointed as the food itself is fine.

Really nice home cooked roast lunch/pies in a "proper" pub. The pub is 16th century, thus fairly small, and by it's nature pretty noisy when full (as it was on our visit - Sunday 8th Feb). They also have a couple of additional areas in conservatory like buildings. All of this is fine, but led to the first minor problem - the service is slow; not food arriving once ordered, but big gaps between courses, because the staff are elsewhere in the pub. When we paid the bill it was vastly incorrect, having several items we didn't order, to be fair this was sorted out quickly. In summery, the food is excellent, the setting is perfect, staff are very helpful - just they need to keep a closer eye on customers seated away from the main bar area. Would we go back - yes, beyond doubt.

We attended for the wine tasting dinner and stayed after, the room was beautifully decorated and extremely clean. Wine tasting was a lot of fun with a well filled charcuterie board to share would definitely recommend for a night out. Food was large portions and really tasty. Very busy pub with a great atmosphere.

Went with family as part of daughters 21st birthday celebrations, we had a lovely big table, service was very good we all enjoyed the food which was of superb quality and value. All our meals came out together no waiting around. When the staff heard it was my daughter’s birthday they returned with a glass of wine for her on the house, a lovely touch. Will definitely be back!

This is my third visit to this lovely pub. Went there today and we was greeted by 2 lovely smiling ladies, I mentioned it was my dads 80th bday and mid way through our meal they played Happy Birthday and bought out a glass of wine on the house for my dad. 10/10 for service and quality of food would highly recommend!!

Stopped for lunch, my husband had the ploughman’s which was huge and apparently delicious. Lovely pork pie, massive chunks of cheddar and Stilton and thick cut ham. I had the roast beef ciabatta with skinny fries. Again very generous portion, lovely beef and really crispy fries. Quick service as well. Both had a pint of well kept beer to wash it all down.
