Truly, this is a one of a kind experience and one our family will never forget. We got to stay one night at Hotarutei Villas and our hosts Joyce, Rika, and Ashley thought of every detail to make the experience unforgettable. The villa is beautiful, spacious, and surrounded by nature. The meals were Michelin star caliber and exceptional. We found this gem by wanting to visit the snow monkeys however we would recommend anyone visiting Japan to make a special trip here for this experience.

The villa is new, spotlessly clean, and comfortable. Anyone who has ever traveled to Japan in winter will appreciate the underfloor heating. Simply wonderful! The private onsen is also a delight – pure luxury. The yukata and bath amenities provided for our stay are equally impressive. In the refrigerator, we found local apple juice, beer, water, milk and ice cream. There's also a Nespresso machine. Joyce is a fantastic hostess and offers exceptionally warm and attentive 5-star service. The same goes for all the staff. You can't help but like them. This place has a soul. We were particularly impressed by the restaurant. It's so tastefully and stylishly decorated. We ate there on our last evening and regretted not having eaten there every night. The food is simply divine. Japanese haute cuisine at its finest. Lunch was also fantastic. The chef is a genius! Although preparing breakfast ourselves in the villa suited our plans better, next time we would like to have breakfast in the restaurant so we don't miss out on any of these delicious meals. And not to mention, we were able to specify what we didn't want to eat, and the chef accommodated our requests. Before booking, we had read some reviews and therefore imagined the villas to be in a secluded wooded area. While there are trees, the road to Snow Monkey Park runs directly in front of the villas. During the park's opening hours in winter, there is quite a bit of traffic, and many visitors use the road on foot, as the bus stop is nearby. While you still have enough privacy in the onsen, you don't only hear the sounds of nature as we had hoped. However, this is just our personal preference, and everything else at this accomodation more than made up for it. You can tell by the fact that we hope to come back and stay longer. If you can afford it, don't hesitate and book – you won't regret it!

This is a truly special place and one of the best stays we’ve ever had in Japan. We stayed for two nights at Hotarutei Villas, and the villas look exactly like the photos—if not better in person. The space is beautifully designed, peaceful, and immaculately clean. It feels like a luxury private villa tucked into the forest, while still being close to Shibu Onsen and the snow monkey park. Joyce is an incredible host—warm, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful. She gave us excellent recommendations for things to do in the area and even led us to a small local apple farm, which ended up being a highlight of our trip. Her hospitality really elevates the entire experience. The outdoor private onsen was absolutely the highlight. Soaking in the hot spring surrounded by nature was deeply relaxing and made this feel like a true onsen retreat. If you’re looking for a quiet place to unwind, practice forest bathing, and disconnect, this is perfect. The food is outstanding—restaurant-quality meals made with high-quality local ingredients and regional specialties. You can tell there’s a strong focus on local produce and showcasing the flavors of the Nagano area. One thing we loved is that Hotarutei offers the best of both worlds: the independence of an Airbnb with a fully equipped kitchen (everything you could possibly need to cook), paired with the comfort and service of a boutique ryokan. It’s ideal whether you want full privacy or a more traditional hospitality experience. If you’re visiting Shibu Onsen, Yudanaka, or Jigokudani, and want a peaceful, luxurious stay with a private onsen and exceptional hospitality, Hotarutei Villas is an easy choice. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
