The place was not as advertised on the website. They said they offered 9 different tours but when I got there, only two tours were available. This place is in the middle of nowhere and there are no restaurants or stores anywhere in the vicinity so you have to have all meals at the ranch - lunch $25, dinner $30. It’s not a restaurant, rather you get the single meal they are serving. The website does not indicate this fact! The food isn’t bad but $25-$30 extra per lunch and dinner is expensive for what you get. There is nice common living room space but the air conditioning isn’t working or isn’t turned up so you really can’t sit in there. The only good thing about the place was Kenneth who was very nice and very accommodating but he seemed to realize what the ranch was offering was not as advertised. What particularly upset me was that I had communicated about the tours with someone named Paola a month before my stay at the ranch and she described tours that were simply not available when I got there. There’s good birding within a short drive if the ranch but not much else. This was the only place I stayed on a 3- week trip that was guilty of false advertising, describing tours that were t available and omitting the fact there was nowhere to eat but the ranch!

Wonderful experience. 3 course meals. More wetland birds to see than we could have imagined. So much nicer doing a Tempisque River cruise from here rather than with a 2 hour drive from the coast. The safari tour was even better. Beautiful balcony looking over the forest with distant mountains.

Do not be discouraged by the road to Rancho Humo, what lies at the end turned out to be a real gem.
This property is nestled up against the central wetlands of Nicoya peninsula on the shore of the Tempisque river and is a definitive location for birdwatchers from all over. My wife and I are not birdwatchers but booked this based on its remote location and its high marks from other reviews. We also booked in offseason so fortunately for us we were the only guests and the staff was so great to make us feel welcome and taken care of all week.
Be sure to let Kenneth make you feel welcome and attend to whatever your needs are and listen to his vast knowledge about the property and it’s animal inhabitants while on the safari tour. Also, Chef Kenya is an absolute magician in the kitchen so don’t miss her daily culinary offerings.
Will absolutely return one day, maybe not during the rainy season though… 😁

The staff was absolutely wonderful and friendly and the food incredible. The surrounding area was full of wildlife, especially birds.

Room was nice. Air conditioner workedwell. Bed was comfortable. Restaurant with pool view and nature view was soothing and romantic in the evening. It is very remote. and relaxing. We went there for birding photography. Found out best time for that is in December. No entertainment or tv. Boat ride on Tempisque River was awesome.

Loved staying here
Rancho Humo was perfect for us: comfortable and peaceful accommodations on the grounds of a working ranch with a nature preserve, so I experienced Costa Rica without feeling like a tourist...even if of course we did take tours, with Kenneth pointing out birds, monkeys, crocodiles, green iguanas (Ticos probably think I'm funny to be excited about iguanas), and even a very cute couple of Pacific screech owls peeping down at us from a tree right outside the front door which I would not have noticed on my own. I was born in Maryland but I never saw a Baltimore oriole before I was here! The staff were very welcoming, Ticos are lovely people.
