We stayed for 5 days over the Christmas break in the Kamahi room. The room is very well appointed with a great view over the bay through the trees in front of a cathedral window. The bed was large and very comfortable, the bathroom well appointed. Deanne and Chris' hospitality was great and nothing was too much trouble. The highlight of the stay was the food. Deanne is a great chef and Chris makes a fine mince pie! Thanks Chris, a nice way to start Christmas day. The food is excellent home cooked fare made from locally sourced ingredients, some from the properties own garden. The Christmas lunch was a veritable feast with salads, a selection of roast meats and vegetables and a great selection of desserts all made by Deanne. Chris was happy to chauffeur us to and from tour pick up and drop off which saved us the walk up the Church Hill. It's short but quite steep. Definitely recommended for a totally relaxing stay on Stewart Island.

Our second stay at Church Hill, as magical as the first. Chris & Deanne are so friendly and helpful and Deanne is an artistic chef - it is worth booking evening meals in addition to breakfast. The rooms are large, stand alone cubes with glass frontage; very comfortable and well appointed with a small kitchen area for making tea & coffee; a good sized bathroom/shower. Our room, Tokoeka, looked out onto Oban harbour. Quiet, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. There is also a laundry room available for guest use.

We had a terrific stay at Church Hill. With Deanne and Chris as your hosts, you cannot go wrong. We would highly recommend enjoying one or more of Deanne's dinners. It was a feast for the senses and palate. This extended to the wonderful breakfast that was available every morning. The rooms were tastefully appointed and comfortable. What made the stay was the attention to details... the freshly baked treats in the room - perfect for afternoon tea time, chocolates before bed, and the freshly prepared lunch for our trip to Ulva island. They were always quick to assist as when Chris picked us up after a hike we did on the Rakiura track. Thank you for a memorable stay! - B&L

Outstanding hospitality from Chris & Deanne, in lovely accommodation with everything catered for, combined with superb cooking by Deanne. Very comfortable all round. Only down side was lack of curtains in top window section, so light arrives early in the summer, and wakes light sleepers like myself. However, overall it was a real treat to stay here. Obviously expensive, but worth it for a four night stay, which is what we enjoyed. Highlight of stay on Stewart Island was a couple of trips up Ulva, one guided, and one self-guided. Don’t miss that. Or the evening Kiwi viewing with Beaks & Feathers.

Amazing location, property, rooms and views. Food matches the same amazing. Short walk up the hill (4 minutes) from ferry, but Chris will be picking you up anyways. Great owners: Chris and Deann. Professional but comfortable to be around and easy conversation. Excellent beds and linens, very fast Wi-Fi. Turn down service with quality chocolates that’s matched by the daily pastry snacks in room. The three en-suite guest rooms are stand alone from each other and separate from main house. So they have nice privacy as well as harbor views. I’ll talk about dining but will also post on the restaurant listing. Fantastic food…breakfast and dinner. Deann is trained as a chef and it shows. Eclectic range of choices for each meal. I tried something different each evening

Outstanding service and cuisine at this delightful boutique hotel and restaurant hosted by Dee and Chris Sara on a magnificent site overlooking Half Moon Bay on Stewart Island, NZ. We stayed five nights and dined at the restaurant every night with an excellent choice of local seafood and fresh ingredients. Dee and Chris were very accomodating arranging for an early dinner so we could go ‘ Kiwi’ spotting at dusk at the airport where they forage on the verge. We were lucky to see two of these illusive creatures under a full moon including a juvenile! We were intrigued with the history of the house in a prime location on the island which had been in the same family for many generations since the early 1900’s before Dee purchased it. I spent some time sketching the beautiful home including the adorable 5 month old Cavoodle ‘ Alfie’ who makes a fine ambassador for tourism greeting every guest enthusiastically! The house has a beautiful collection of Dee’s photography featuring birds of Stewart Island. It is centrally located for easy access to the village of Oban where we hired electric bikes which gave us good access to interesting points on the island such as Acker’s Point and Acker’s stone house one of the oldest houses in NZ built in 1821. We also rode round to Horseshoe Bay which was very enjoyable and walked along the coastline to the native gardens with the help from Chris with a lift. He also provided delicious homemade hotcross buns for our journey! The hotel is also in fairly close proximity to the Ulva Island ferry which is a must for seeing the rich birdlife of the area. A tour includes a cruise around the island which includes sealions, lots of albatross, shags and penguins. Chris was very helpful delivering and picking us up from this tour.
