We had the extraordinary opportunity this August to spend five days at Reef Resort, on the beautiful little island of Kapa in Tonga. We traveled as a family – myself, my husband, and our two children (11 and 15 years old) – with the main goal of experiencing three consecutive days of swimming with mother whales and calves in the ocean waters around Tonga during their migration season. Reef Resort turned out to be far beyond our expectations. The resort itself is small and intimate, with a handful of bungalow-style villas – authentic, simple, yet elegant, with everything you need. The landscape is breathtaking: every morning we felt like we were looking at a living postcard or a painting rather than reality. Our host, Helwig, spends four months each year here. Originally from Austria, he has transformed this place into an oasis of peace, authenticity, and good taste. He is extremely attentive to his guests – organizing arrivals, departures, and making sure every detail of your stay is taken care of. The food was sensational – truly Michelin-level quality. Each season, Helwig brings in a talented European chef, and every meal was a delight. The price-to-quality ratio here is outstanding. The island itself is a haven of untouched nature. Safe, quiet, and intimate – where even butterflies of all colors land on you as you walk through. The resort is equipped with kayaks (including glass-bottom ones), paddleboards, and small boats. You can paddle to nearby islets, explore the pristine jungle, or simply spend hours gazing at the ocean. Of course, the highlight was the whale swimming experience, organized directly through Reef Resort. The excursions are safe, highly professional, and respectful of the whales and their environment. To encounter these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, especially mothers with calves, was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Overall, Reef Resort exceeded every expectation – location, cleanliness, food, activities, and authenticity. We give it a perfect 10/10. Beyond the place itself, the cultural experiences, the songs of the local families, and the warmth of the Tongan people made our stay unforgettable. Everything here feels genuine, natural, and full of heart. If you are looking for a hidden paradise, a place to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature and authenticity, Reef Resort in Tonga is the perfect choice.

From the time you land at the dock until the time you leave, Herwig and his staff make sure your time on this beautiful island is something to remember. The food and accommodation are outstanding. Make sure you take advantage of the kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkelling gear. It's the perfect base for your whale swimming adventures.

The Reef Resort was amazing. Exceeded expectations. I had looked at a number of other places to stay in the area and booked the Reef Resort due to the stellar reviews from others. We were not disappointed. - The food was excellent. The chef made every meal a party in our mouths. The sauces he prepared for each dish were creative and so very delicious. Additionally, the food presentation on our plates was something one would find at a Michelin restaurant. - The staff performed like one would find at a 5 star hotel. Service was outstanding from those cleaning our room to those responsible for the grounds to those involved in each meal. In addition, we were always greeted with a smile and warm words. - It is clear that the owner of the Resort focuses on providing an unforgettable experience for travelers. He is attentive and available to each guest regardless of the time of day. We thoroughly appreciated the great excursions he arranged for us as well as the friendly reminders on when we were to be ready for each excursion.
