Celebrated my wife’s 70 birthday with family at this lovely restaurant. Staff were friendly polite and very attentive. There were 9 adults and one 2yr old in our party. Everyone agreed the food was delicious, good variety of dishes from starters to desserts. I was pleasantly surprised at the final bill bearing in mind we had various bottles of wine cocktails and other drinks. This was our first visit will definitely be back !!!.

Our Christmas night out at Funky Monk Epping had so much festive potential, and overall we really did have a fun time! The festive set menu was a highlight—both the steak and the turkey were genuinely delicious, and the dessert was a lovely finish to the meal. The only real miss on the food side was the pâté starter, which felt a little too basic and was served simply on bread; it definitely needed a bit more care or creativity. Entertainment-wise, the evening really shone! The singer was absolutely excellent and created a brilliant atmosphere. The DJ had all the right tunes lined up, though the mixing (from CDs!) was a bit rough around the edges. A couple more Christmas songs would’ve lifted the festive spirit even further, especially given the occasion. The main downside of the night came from the table placement and some organisational hiccups. Our table—and a nearby table of five—had been set on the dance-floor, which meant people were dancing around us while we were trying to enjoy our meal. That took away from the dining experience, and it felt like the placement of later guests just wasn’t thought through. On top of that, our table hadn’t been set with festive touches like crackers because the team had forgotten we’d pre-ordered, so they had to confirm our choices again. The gluten-free dessert also wasn’t brought out as planned, so that had to be corrected. We were offered a free drink each to make up for the mistakes, which was appreciated. The bar was another pressure point—there simply weren’t enough staff, so getting a drink took some patience! All that said, the atmosphere, entertainment, and festive food made it a memorable night, and we’d absolutely visit again. With better organisation and a few extra hands at the bar, it could easily go from good to fantastic.

Funky Monk -DO NOT STAY HERE!,
I arrived at the Funky Monk at 4.45pm and the manager was very pleasant and told me that they had some live music that night. I jokingly said I hoped they provided earplugs. Having had a night out with friends I arrived back at the hotel around 11.30pm to be greeted by music so loud that I could hear it on the street. When I got to my room the floor was vibrating with the noise and it was like there was the band were sharing my room. I put earplugs in and a pillow over my ears to try and deaden the sound but it had no effect. I looked at their website which says they do have live music that ends at 12, it said nothing about the decibels they allow. They had give me a number to ring out of hours but no one answered or got back to me. At 12.15am I went downstairs and they said they could continue until 12.30 - however it continued until12.55am. If they want to be a hotel they need to soundproof the rooms. What most people want when they book a hotel is to be able to sleep - this was impossible in the Funky Monk. If you also want this then DO NOT stay in this hotel. These are not cheap rooms, money has been spent on the decor rather than making it a place were you can actually sleep. I shall never stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone else. There was no gas for breakfast on Monday morning!!

We stayed 2 x Nights Bank Holiday Sunday to Tuesday in a Studio Suite. Check in was very easy and simple , with 2 x glass of Prosecco to welcome us. Room was well and truly cool , very “Funk” and in keeping with the name , spacious, stylish. Only blemish was the roll top bath in the room literally when trying to run a bath the water coming out was non existent. We had dinner for 10 I think of us which was superb , and I mean superb the quality, service and everything was top drawer. Great location on the High Street with all that you may need extras on the door step. All in all a great time ! We will be back
