As the final stop on our two-week vacation tour in Sumatra, we decided to end our trip in Padang and book Air Manis Hill Resident as the luxurious, relaxing part of the journey. We needed three rooms and were offered a price of IDR 6.5 million (USD 402) per night for all three rooms, including breakfast. We arrived late in the evening and were welcomed by a lady who is responsible for the property. The owner does not live in Indonesia. There was not much introduction to the place, and after a short while the lady went home. We were then completely alone in the house — with no security at all. When we woke up the next morning, we saw a beautiful, well-maintained garden, a swimming pool, and a stunning view of the ocean. Unfortunately, we also noticed how dirty the place was: old, worn-out towels; dirty bed linen; a filthy bath mat; grime in all corners; dirty power outlets, lamps, shelves — dirt everywhere. There was no hot water in the taps. We complained directly to the owner, who apologized. Nothing much happened on the first day, but on the second day a bit of cleaning was done. The bed linen and towels were changed, and the areas we had pointed out in photos were dusted. However, all other corners were still very dirty, and there was still no hot water. We complained again, and a technician was finally brought in to repair the system, so after our third night we were able to take a hot shower. We ended up getting a discount of about 25%, which we still felt was expensive considering what we got for the money. The owner excused it with the weather and one staff member being ill. The weather was indeed very bad, but this has nothing to do with how clean the house, towels, and bedsheets are. And without us complaining, we would still have paid full price. It is a house without security, and the staff (with very limited english) went home at 5 p.m. So when the power went out early one morning, we had to wait for it to be restored until the staff arrived around 8 a.m. The description and photos shown on the website are certainly not up to date — I guess this is how the property looked 10 or more years ago. Still, the best we can say is this: for the price of a 5-star hotel, you only get a stunning view, a beautiful garden, and a nice pool - which you can only enjoy when it is not raining.

Killer view, nice pool BUT not worth coming for the amenities they offer. In all honesty, this was a 1-star B&B experience located at a 5-star location. Bad breakfast, burnt and no choice in offerings. OK equipped room but nothing more than the minimum, bungalow quite rickety and badly functioning shower. On the last days the housekeeping even replaced the sheets with still moist ones; and those would not dry in that climate. Did not feel comfortable expressing this to staff on-site due to language barrier and attitude. Getting a taxi to and from the location was also quite an hassle and no real alternatives were offered by staff. Payment on-site also difficult, so recommend bringing cash or leaving deposit beforehand.

A lovely place, admittedly, but at an unusual price for what you get. High on a hill with a great view over the sea (and noise that is climbing up the mountain from the beach), this is a beautiful location, but far away from the city. You should order your food in advance and the meal comes with steamed rice and the plate that you have ordered without any frills. Also breakfast is brought down to a minimum, no yoghurt. The room is spacious, but the bathroom is in need of some upkeep already. The amenities are sparse at such a price (Euro 150 per night). The staff and Zariah are friendly. One cannot pay with a credit card, only cash or the horrible paypal system. No, this was disappointing, in spite of the nice pool without internet.
